The London Marathon is the second youngest of the four major marathons, and was established in 1981. Not only is the race a great event for runners, but many use the marathon as a way to raise money for charity. Between 1981 and 2017, participants have raised over 700 million pounds for charitable foundations. The London Marath1on also holds a Guinness World Record for one-day charity fundraising. That record has been broken every year for almost a decade.
The London Marathon’s course navigates around some of the most famous landmarks in the UK. The race starts just below the Thames, and continues through Greenwich and Blackheath. Next, runners cross the Tower Bridge and go past the London Eye and the Tower of London. It then ends in front of Buckingham Palace. If you are a runner, the historic nature of the course alone is a huge draw. Out of the 250k applications that the race organizers receive, just over 50k of them are invited to participate. Consistently, the number of runners is just over 39k.
Last year the London Marathon men’s race was won by Amos Kipruto of Kenya. The women’s race was won by Yalemzerf Yehualaw of Etheopia. The men’s wheelchair race was won by Marcel Hug from Switzerland, and the women’s wheelchair race was won by Catherine Debrunner from Switzerland. You have two options for watching the race. For those near London, you should go watch this race live. If you are not close, you can watch the Marathon on BBC. If you are traveling outside the UK, you may watch on BBC iPlayer by connecting to a VPN server in London.
