Beginning in 1974, the Berlin Marathon is the oldest major outside of the United States. The World Champion Majors competition was founded in 2006, and the Berlin Marathon became a favorite on the circuit. It may not have the history of some of the other marathons, but Berlin has it’s own history. From running through the Brandenburg Gate to the Fall of the Berlin Wall, it is hard not to reflect on the past.
The course for the Berlin Marathon begins and ends near the Brandenburg Gate, and is part of a giant loop. Prior to 1990, runners were limited to West Germany. When the race was held on September 30th, 1990, runners were able to run through the Brandenburg Gate for the first time. Tears were common for those that were a part of the historic moment.
2022 will mark the 48th running of the race. Because of the course, runners enjoy the fastest marathon in the world. The Men’s world record of 2:02:57 set by Dennis Kipruto Kimetto in 2014. That means there was a sustained speed of roughly 13 MPH over 26.2 miles. At those speeds, the race certainly pushes the limits of the human body. The women’s course record is held by Mizuki Noguchi, and it was set in 2005. Given these stats, it will be fun to see if new records can be set.
