The first Boston Marathon was held on the third Monday in April in 1897. It was inspired by the revival of the marathon in the 1896 Olympic Games. The race remains as the oldest marathon in the US, and the second oldest continuously held footrace in North America. Given its age, there is a lot of history involved with the Boston Marathon. From doping and cheating scandals to deaths and even the 2013 bombing, this race has seen its share of incidents.
There are several traditions that also take place during the Marathon. About half way through the course, runners encounter what is known as the Scream Tunnel. The tunnel is located at Wellesley College and is about 1/4 a mile long. Here, students of the college line-up on the course to scream and offer kisses. The sound gets so loud in the tunnel, it can be heard from a mile away. If you plan on being there or participating, it would be smart to bring earplugs.
Another favorite tradition that takes place is the Boston Red Sox Baseball game. Since 1903, the Red Sox have held a game at 11:05 am on the day of the race. When the game ends, the crowd empties out on Kenmore Square to cheer on marathoners running the last mile of the race. Though the game is sometimes delayed due to weather, the Boston Marathon is not.
