Best VPNs for Eero WiFi Routers

EeroEero WiFi routers are mesh-capable and listed as fast smart home WiFi. While you can use this small device alone, adding additional eero Pro 6 units can extend the WiFi to cover up to 6,000 sq. ft. with gigabit speeds. Instead of the typical looks of a router, Eero has made this one asymmetrical and relatively nonchalant. It is praised for its ease of setup. It also comes in several different versions, depending on your needs. You will find the company is security minded but does not natively give you the ability to install VPN on their devices. You will need to set up a VPN passthrough to solve this issue. We will tell you why that is important in a moment. Before we do, though, please look closely at our list of the best VPNs for Eero WiFi.

What is eero Secure+ and How Does it Work?

The Eero WiFi router is great and looks non-descript. One of the features that users appreciate is their eero Secure+ which let’s you add VPN through Encrypt.me, password management via 1Password, and antivirus with Malwarebytes. While this package is a good value, a lot of users are confused by the offering. You would think that if eero sold a subscription that included VPN that they would allow you to install it on their device. Unfortunately that isn’t the case. Your encrypt.me family account allows you to install the service on up to 5 devices. The service currently has VPN apps for Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and Amazon Fire.

Once again, the eero Secure+ plan does not allow you to install a VPN on your eero WiFi system. You will need to add a router that supports VPN passthrough to encrypt your traffic.

How to Set Up a VPN Passthrough with eero

The key to setting up a VPN to work on all your devices is to place a router in front of your eero router. I know this isn’t the desired outcome. We would love to see eero allow you to configure their system with VPN but so far they are not open to doing so. They have a help center page that answers the question of whether or not they provide support for VPN. The answer is yes, but indirectly. You need to set up a VPN passthrouugh on another router that is placed just in front of your eero.

The process of setting up a VPN passthrough is made easier by the ExpressVPN router app. It currently supports a number of devices including:

  • Asus – RT-AC56(U/R/S), RT-AC68U, RT-AC87U
  • Linksys – EA 6200, WRT1200AC, WRT1900AC(S), WRT3200ACM, WRT32X
  • Netgear – R6300v2, R6400v2, Nighthawk R6700v3, Nighthawk R7000, Nighthawk R7000P

Once you have selected a router from the list, you can visit the ExpressVPN site for detailed instructions for installing their router app on your device. Doing so will allow you to set up a VPN passthrough with your eero home wifi system.

By doing so, you can protect all of your network devices. Of course, that includes the “IoT” devices on your network. From smart TVs to game consoles, and smart fridges to personal assistants, no one wants their devices to start misbehaving. You will find that the Eero updates easily and has a special skill on Alexa. When you connect to a VPN, you will protect the communication from all the devices in your home. That is because you create a layer of encryption that spans across your entire network.

What is the Best VPN for Eero WiFi?

To best answer this question, we need to take a look at several things. Because of that, we focused on security factors primarily, along with the ability to install the VPN on a router for passthrough purposes.

  • Strong military grade encryption to help protect the privacy of all of your devices including your Eero WiFi router
  • Ability to get around geo-restrictions, sports blackouts, or government censorship while using an Eero WiFi router
  • Multi-platform mobile app support including Amazon Firestick and guides to help you set up other devices
  • Large and stable networks to avoid dropped connections on your Eero WiFi
  • Providers that offer a strict no-logs policy

From here, we’ll take a closer look at the best VPNs to use with Eero WiFi.
