The World Aquatics Championships began in 1973, and is run by FINAThey are an international committee that is recognized by the IOC that oversees six aquatic events. Though the timing of the games has varied, the events have finally settled in to an odd year, every two year cycle with the 16th set of championships being held this year.

The dominating force in these games is typically the USA. The Americans have won the medal count an impressive 80% of the time in the first 15 champions. They dwarf their next closest competitor, China, by winning more than double the number of medals. Though this year may not be any different, the championships should offer solid competitions with great athletes.

There are six major categories in the games, but this year a record number of 75 different events will be contested by 2,400 athletes. Interestingly, the games have almost as many officials as they do competitors. A staggering 1,800 officials will be judging the events. The main categories for the championships are:

  • swimming
  • diving
  • open water swimming
  • synchronized swimming
  • water polo
  • high diving

The coverage for World Aquatics Championships will be massive. Eurovision TV is acting as a the host for these games so between the 54 TV companies and the 14 radio companies offering coverage, it is estimated that approximately half of the world’s population (4.5 billion people) will be following the events.

With all that coverage, why would you need a VPN? One reason is to keep your private information secure and the second reason is despite all of those broadcast partners, live streaming of the events will not be available to all countries because of contractual reasons. The countries excluded are Italy, Serbia, Croatia, Montenegro, Kosovo, Macedonia, Bosnia, Slovenia, Algeria, Bahrain, Chad, Djibouti, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, Yemen, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, and Hungary.

However, by using a VPN, you could connect and watch the championships live online on your computer, tablet, or even smart phone. Since Eurovision is the host, the events will be available to stream for free. Access to Eurovision for these events will be geo-restricted outside of the intended areas, so a good VPN service will help you unblock the channel. Geographical restriction is a way of tracking the user’s IP address, and restricting them based on location. Fortunately, we have some wonderful recommendations for VPN services.

Enjoy all the excitement during the 2015 World Aquatics Championships and watch to see if the US will hold on to their dominance in the games or if another country will prove their medal.
