History and Schedule for the tournament
The Royal Birkdale Golf Club is well known to women’s golf fans. That is because it will be the 6th time hosting the event. It is one of the few clubs to host the men’s British Open as well. Great names in both opens have played on this course, so it is not hard to see why it is popular among fans and players. Though not as old as some of the other British courses, the Birkdale Golf Club was built in 1889. It did not receive “Royal” status until 1951.
While the women’s Britsh Open may not be as popular yet, you have to consider when it was founded. For men, the Britsh Open was founded in 1860. However, the women’s British Open was not founded for another 116 years. Just think of all the prestige that could have built up over time if the tournaments shared similar starting dates. Even the founding dates of the LPGA vs the PGA have a 34-year margin between them. As more people become interested, we may see women’s golf finally get the respect it deserves.
The golfer you need to follow is Stacy Lewis. She is the returning champion from last year’s British Open, and she just took second place in the Women’s US Open at Pinehurst. Though she has some stiff competition, Stacy Lewis will be eager to win the women’s British Open two times in a row. She also was the LPGA Player of the Year and is well on her way to winning that honor this year.
As with any tournament, anyone can win. It is a matter of how well they play during the few day span of the tournament. Unlike other sports where you may be able to build up a lead during the season and relax through some games, golf is different. It is quite frequent for the favorite not to do well if they have some bad rounds. By the same token, you may see players that have never won a major tournament before, suddenly win one. Many fans will say that is part of the draw of watching golf and following the tournaments.
No matter who wins, any female golfer that wants to be the best has their work cut out for them. The woman golfer with the most wins in history is Kathy Whitworth. When she joined the LPGA only eight years after it’s creation, she started winning tournaments. Over the course of her 23-year career, Kathy Whitworth won a remarkable 88 tournaments. Not only did she help to shape the future of women’s golf, she set a record that may be almost impossible to beat. Very few women golfers have a career span of even half the number of years that Kathy Whitworth played.
