WNBA teams and league history

The WNBA was founded in 1996 as a way of giving a professional option to women’s basketball. The league started with 18 teams, but has held steady at 12 teams since 2009. With great women’s college basketball teams in the US, and players from other countries, the sport gets more popular every season. Which team will win in the exciting finals this year?

Last year, the Phoenix Mercury won the championship with one of their star players, Brittney Griner, sitting on the bench. The other players really stepped up their performance in Griner’s absence beating the Chicago Sky, 87-82 in the 3rd game. One of the Mercury’s players that helped win that game, Diana Taurasi, will unfortunately not be playing in the 2015 WNBA season. The reason she is sitting out this season is not due to any sort of injury or problem, but because the Russian team she plays for, UMMC Ekaterinburg, has agreed to pay her not to play so she will be rested for their games.

The big question is, are there other teams that will have that kind of deal with other players? If that starts happening more often, athletes will have to decide if they want to make the trade off between money and fame. It is hard to imagine that Diana Taurasi will play for the Phoenix Mercury much longer. If she is not going to play basketball for them, there is really no point for the coach to keep her on the roster. So much talent could be lost in the United States because it is being sold to the highest bidder.

On the other side of the argument, it is not fair to expect these athletes to give up money for a small amount of fame they receive in the US. Just like with other sports, some of the players do not come from great situations. If they are trying to improve their lives or the lives of their families, the money is very tempting.

Below is a list of the 12 teams in the WNBA currently, in no particular order.
