The Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is the second oldest continuously held sporting event in the US. Dating back to May 8th, 1877, this great show was originally started to display gun dogs, pointers, and terriers. It was held by a group of hunters that regularly met at the Westminster Hotel in Manhattan. The show predates the founding of the American Kennel Club in 1884. Currently, the event is held at Madison Square Garden and draws over nearly 3000 dogs. The winner is designated as America’s dog until the next show. It is interesting to note that no monetary awards are given. Instead, the best in show winner gets a polished Pewter Gallery Bowl.
Though it still draws interest, the show has faced some backlash in recent years. That is due to the stance the AKC takes against mandatory spaying or neutering programs. They consider these programs to be anti-dog. An interesting position considering they feel dogs are property. Let’s take a look at the ways to watch this great event. If you want to attend in person and are in the area, you can expect to pay from $40-$120 per ticket per day. The rest of us can watch on the Fox Sports Go app beginning at 8:30 am on February 11th, 2018.
