VPN4test is a relatively unknown player in the VPN community. It is the VPN of choice, however, if you try to use the YesPornPlease website and you are outside of the US, you will be directed to this one. It is labeled as a free VPN and it has 10 server locations available. As we have said in previous reviews of free VPNs, they always make us a bit wary. If you know the expression “You get what you pay for”, it leaves you wondering how they can afford to do this. The Google Play Store shows it at over 100k downloads with a 3.6 star rating. Depending on when it launched, that is a bit concerning. It is available for Windows, Mac, Linux, and Android.
Want to compare VPN4test to our top recommended VPN services? Here are some of the best alternatives. Each VPN offers a 30 day risk-free trial period to test the service.
About the Company
As far as company information goes, there is very little information about the VPN or the parent company called “ice Wall”. Typically, we like to have some transparency in the company. However, even a domain search shows virtually nothing. The only indication we got of where the company might be located is the country code. Since it is listed as +33, that could mean that the company is based in France. If that is true, that makes it part of the 14 eyes countries.
Of course, security is very important when dealing with a VPN. It claims to have some of the features that the more widespread providers have. However, we have found that services that are free usually have some big issues. They do claim to have their own DNS and a zero logs policy. If those are are both correct, they are at least saying the right things. We shall see in the testing how it fares, though. It is hard to judge security when the company is not transparent and there is so little information available.
As far as the features go, the company offers the following features.
- Tor touting option
- Zero log policy
- No bandwidth limit
- 24/7 help desk support
- Ability to continously swap location every 40 – 140 min
- Unlimited connections
Server Locations and Countries
There are few servers and locations to speak of. Currently, there are only 10 locations it speaks of. Those are Bulgaria, Georgia, Singapore, UK, Germany, Czech Republic, Russia, Netherlands, Miami (US), and New York (US). On the Android version, you also get the option to connect to Canada
VPN wise, this one is straight forward. After you download it, follow these steps. Please note, we are using the Windows version.
- Open the downloaded files.
- Create an account or log in as a guest.
- Select the server you wish to connect to on the map.
Now that you have connected, it is time to test the speed.
VPN4test Speed Test
The VPN4test is fast. As you can see in the image, there is a difference between the two numbers. As you can see in the image below, there is about a 28% diffence. If that is accurate, that is reasonable and consistent when compared to our other providers. While the company is a bit vague on things, it does natually default to the OpenVPN UDP protocol. Please be aware that other servers and protocols may be different, but that makes the company at least appear on the level.
Why you should use a VPN
Since so many establishments now offer free WiFi, you will want to use a VPN when you connect. While WiFi is great, the cybercriminals think it is great as well. By connecting to the server of your choice, you create a secure and encrypted connection. That way, you greatly reduce the risk that criminals or cyberthieves will steal your private information.
Another reason to use a VPN is to help you get around geo-restrictions. No matter where you are, connecting to a server there will help. That is because it makes the blocking software think you are located somewhere else. That can be a real advantage if you are trying to access certain regions or you are being blocked from viewing content. Simply connect to a server and you can start browsing or viewing the content you want to access.
What About Leaks?
As you know, this is a free VPN service. Since the encryption seemed on the level, we like to test for leaks as well. Just like we suspected, this one leaks like a sieve. We discovered that by using dnsleaktest.com and it showed us the level this one leaks. Of course, leaking servers are a big deal, especially when you are using a VPN. That makes us extremely wary of using this VPN.
Should I Use this VPN?
Getting down to the basics, using this VPN service may be an ok idea if you want to unblock geo-restrictions. However, you would not want to use it if you are trying to keep your activities private. If you are the least bit concerned about your privacy, you will want to stay away from this one. Additionally, since some countries ban the usage of certain websites and VPNs as well, this certainly fails. There are plenty of other options that are definitely better options.
Final Thoughts About VPN4test
There are 2 sticking points in the selection of this VPN. Those include the lack of transparency with the company, the locaton of the headquarters (not really known), and the super leaky DNS. However, it may not be bad if you are just trying to unblock a website and do not care about your privacy at all. It could help you get around geo-restrictions if you want to use something like SoundCloud, Pandora, or others. Feel free to take a look at our top 10 VPNs for comparison to make a great choice.
