About the Company

Thunder VPN RegistrationThis VPN was created by a company called Signal Lab. Strangely, that name is similar to a secure messaging app, made by the Signal Foundation. Even though the name could be a coincidence, we doubt it. Finding information about this company is difficult, which makes us wary. Their website is pretty minimal and only provides a small amount of information. That said, if you do some searching, you can come up with some answers. To the right is the registration information for the site. If you look closely, you will see a number of discrepancies. For example, It states the city and state as being “Alhambra, Arkansas”. In looking, there is no such place. All indications (the zip code and city name) show that the company is actually in California instead. Additionally, the area code is listed at 626. That is the area code for Alhambra, California. While it is likely just a mistake, it adds to the suspicion of this company for us.

Pricing

Thunder VPN PricingWhile the service is free, they also have a “VIP” version of the VPN. Their price for 1 month of service is $9.99. However, you can get 12 months of service for $59.99. Oddly, they have a weekly plan as well for $5.99. As you see in the image to the right, you can also try it for 3 days for free. Of course, you can cancel after the 3-day trial, or you can keep it for the amount we just mentioned. Since it is tied to your Google pay account, purchasing the service is very easy to do.

Hands-On Testing

Thunder VPN Speed Test

Speed loss is one of the disadvantages of using a free service. The server we tested was incredibly slow. We used the “best server” option. When you look at the images, you will see that we used the same location for each test. As you can see, if they offer a fast service, it is certainly not part of it. let’s hope there are better speeds on the premium version. As you see, you loose more than 99% of your speed. Also, any time you connect or disconnect, you will see an ad. That can get annoying if you connect to different locations.

Why you should use a VPN

Since so many establishments now offer free WiFi, you will want to use a VPN when you connect. While WiFi is great, the cybercriminals think it is great as well. By connecting to the server of your choice, you create a secure and encrypted connection. That way, you greatly reduce the risk that criminals or cyberthieves will steal your private information.

Another reason to use a VPN is to help you get around geo-restrictions. No matter where you are, connecting to a server there will help. That is because it makes the blocking software think you are located somewhere else. That can be a real advantage if you are trying to access certain regions or you are being blocked from viewing content. Simply connect to a server and you can start browsing or viewing the content you want to access.

What About Leaks?

Leaktest ThunderAs you might expect with many free VPNs this one leaks like a sieve. That is why we decided to test the comprehensive leak tester at www.doileak.com. We like using this one because it shows you the different areas where it detects problems. As you can see by the image to the right, this VPN has some issues and does leak. Of course, some of the issues you see to the right came from problems with mobile browsing instead of from the service.

Should I Use this VPN?

Getting down to the basics, using this VPN service (if you go for the free version) will be slow and leaky. You may be able to get around some geo-restrictions from time to time, but if you want to use a VPN for the primary function of protecting your privacy, this one misses the mark. On top of the leaks, it is extremely slow. If y If you want a service with a better degree of security and no leaks, there are plenty of premium services out there. We would look elsewhere.

Final Thoughts About Thunder VPN

Even though this VPN is extremely popular, you would not want to use it for anything serious. You should always protect yourself when you are on WiFi. This free service is very slow, leaky, and can not be trusted. That said, it may be only slightly better than using nothing. Just remember that you will only be able to connect to the USA, Canada, UK, France, Netherlands, Germany if you use the free version. It could help you get around geo-restrictions if you want to use something like SoundCloud, Pandora, or others, but you should not expect any more from it.
