Beginning originally in 1926, the championship changed formats in 1957 to a bi-annual event. The singles play takes place in odd-numbered years, but doubles and mixed doubles still occur every year. You can imagine the sport has seen champions from all over, but several countries have been dominant for some time.

China has been a force to be reckoned with since the late ’50s. Though they do not always win, it is hard to deny their dominance over the last 5 decades. Other countries that have been strong in singles play through the years include Hungary, England, Japan, and Sweden. Though, most of those countries have not had a strong performance in some time.

In 2021, the last event for individual competitors, China’s own Fan Zhendong won the men’s singles and Wang Manyu won the women’s singles championship. Can players from China continue the trend to take home the gold and silver medals again for male and female singles matches? By doing so, they would be the first country in history to win the gold and silver five times in a row for both.

Here’s a list of the trophies for each event in the tournament:

  • Men’s singles – St Bride Vase
  • Women’s singles – Geist Prize
  • Men’s doubles – Iran Cup
  • Women’s doubles – W. J. Pope Trophy
  • Mixed doubles – Heydusek Prize

The ITTF will be posting videos of the tournament on their ITTF YouTube channel. If you are unable to access YouTube from your country, then we suggest using a VPN. You can connect to a VPN server in another country to watch the videos. We also expect broadcast coverage from channels in different areas of the world. However, the matches may not be on at the time you wish to see them. Coverage could also be shown on stations you do not have access to. If you would rather not take the chance, a VPN is the way to go.
