Race course info and schedule for the event

The Nurburgring course was completed in 1927, and is a dedicated race course. The North Loop where the Nürburgring 24 hour race is held, has a length of of 20.8 km (12.9 mi) and was first run in 1970. Because the race has more than a 300 meter (1000 feet) elevation change between the highest and lowest points, one of the drivers gave it the nickname of the “Green Hell”.

Unlike normal races that finish after a number of laps, endurance races are different. The goal of the Nürburgring 24 hour race is to make as many laps as you can in a 24 hour period. Though drivers can drive more or less time, each one will drive an average of 6 hours. Some choose to think of this race as a relay race, since drivers are changed. At 159 laps, the average lap took 15.09 seconds including stops. That may sound like a slow time, but remember the track has 154 turns over the 12.9 mile course. There are sure to be more laps completed by future teams.

The ADAC Nürburgring 24 hour race will start on Saturday, May 16th at 4PM CET and run through Sunday, May 17th at 4PM CET.  The team with the most laps will be declared the winner.  It’s interesting to see the cars that win each year. Audi took home their first ever victory in 2012 and then won again in 2014. Can Audi repeat or will another car manufacturer like Mercedes, Porsche, or BMW win this year? Since 1970, there have only been 9 race winners that were not represented by one of those 4 companies. The last car of a different manufacturer to win was the Opel Astra V8 Coupe in 2003.

Let’s take a look at the winning teams and cars for the last five years:

  • 2022 – Audi Sport Team Phoenix in an Audi R8 LMS Evo II
  • 2021 – Manthey Racing in a Porsche 911 GT3 R
  • 2020 – Rowe Racing in a BMW M6 GT3
  • 2010 – Audi Sport Team Phoenix in an Audi R8 LMS Evo
  • 2018 – Manthey Racing in a Porsche 911 GT3 R

You can watch the official ADAC stream on the race free online.  This will be our first year watching the race from abroad so I’m not sure whether or not ADAC puts any geographic restrictions on their coverage.  A lot of sites will geo-block content to users in a specific region of the world.  In the case of ADAC, if they decide to geo-block the race we would assume they will block users outside of Germany based on IP address.  A good VPN service can help you get around this issue.

Catch all the action by watching the ADAC live stream and additional coverage of the race.  Please share this post with your friends so they can enjoy The Nürburgring 24 hour race.  Follow us @VPNFan for the latest VPN reviews and promotions from leading providers.
