NBCSN has been around for quite some time. It originally began as the Outdoor Life Network in 1995. Then, the channel was dedicated to hunting, fishing, and outdoor adventure shows. 2005 saw the channel take it’s first steps toward a mainstream sports network when Comcast used it to bid on the NHL contract. That move was designed to be competition for ESPN.
In 2011, Comcast bought a big part of NBC, so the channel got merged with NBC Sports.
