The fourth season of the show launched with over 4 million viewers and was the most-watched multichannel program since the 2012 Olympics. It involves a group of contestants that are constantly under video surveillance. To survive in the “villa”, the islanders must be coupled up with another person for love, friendship, or money. The winning couple receives £50,000. On the first day, the islanders couple up for the first time based on first impressions, but are forced to “re-couple” where they can remain or swap or change.
Any Islander who remains single after the coupling happens is eliminated and removed from the island. Like many other reality shows, islanders can also be eliminated by way of public vote on the Love Island app. It is available on smartphones and viewers can vote for their favorite or most compatible couple. If you are one of the couples with the fewest number of votes, you run the risk of being eliminated. Often times, a twist has occurred where it has been up to the Islanders to eliminate couples. During the final week, the public vote for which couple they want to win the series and therefore take home £50,000.
