Everyone likes the “Incognito Search” and privacy tabs available in most browsers. However, have you wondered if they are actually private? Think about that the next time you decide to browse to your favorite website anonymously. The truth is, even in incognito mode, there are still a number of people that can track you. Those include your ISP, the government, and even the guy sitting at Starbucks. Sure, he is working.. on getting your browsing history. In other words, you may not be as secure as you thought you were when you use incognito browsing.
What is Incognito Mode Actually?
Incognito Mode is a special mode that is available on most popular browsers that helps users hide their online activities from other users of the computer. You will often see it called different names on different browsers. It typically deletes the history of any websites you may visit during the session, saves no information, and deletes any “cookies” that you might collect during browsing. Activating this mode is different on every browser. However, it can usually be found under settings and new tab or window.
Issues with this Mode
No matter what it is called, the “Incognito Mode” works well and stops your browser from saving your browsing activity. That said, that is about the extent of the protection. It wont stop you from getting monitored by schools, governments, ISPs, and those that like to monitor free WiFi hotspots. If you truly want to protect your browsing, there are other was to do it.
Suggestions for Browsing or Searching
There are 3 things you can do protect your browsing or searching. We list them below.
- DuckDuckGo – This is a search engine that keeps the users private. It does not use the standard tracking cookies, so you can ensure that your searching is actually private.
- VPN – Software tool that allows you to encrypt your browsing activity and allows you to get past geo-restrictions.
- Tor Browser – The Tor Browser will anonymize your browing traffic by using a number of distributed relay points run by thousands of volunteers. Because the traffic travels through these relay points. While this is a great option for privacy, it is terribly slow. If you are browsing or doing anything that needs a fast connection, the Tor Browser is not the best solution.
As you can see now, you are not completely protected when using the Incognito Mode. Of course, it will protect you from some things, but it will not help to keep others from being able to monitor your activity.
