Activities that are typically included in the games are standard aerobic, weight lifting, and gymnastics movements. Surprise activities may be things like ocean swimming, softball throwing, ascending a pegboard or more. All of these events will help to determine the most fit in the different divisions.
Since the games’ establishment in 2007, there have been several controversies. The games are officially sponsored by Reebok and CrossFit so competitors were banned from wearing Nike footwear during the 2015 games. Nike answered the ban by parking several trucks near the main entrance of the arena. These trucks contained the slogan “Don’t ban our shoe, beat our shoe”. Nike’s Metcon shoes are also prohibited from using the term CrossFit to market them.
Another interesting move by CrossFit was to award the winners of the 2016 games with handguns. That move drew wide criticism from members and sponsors. Protests caused the temporary closure of several locations in New York.
Participation and interest in these games have grown rapidly since the beginning. The prize money went from a $500 purse in each division the first year to $300k in 2019. You can only imagine those numbers will go up more. Also in 2019, there will be 175 countries represented by registered members. Categories have also increased to include 5 different age divisions for those participants 40 years of age and older.
