Commonwealth GamesThe Commonwealth Games are a group of many events that are only open to members of the Commonwealth of Nations. In 2022, the events will be held in Birmingham, England beginning on Thursday, July 28th and ending on Monday, August 8th. To many, the games are considered to be a smaller version of the Olympics. The downside is, there is far less media coverage than we’ve come to expect during the Olympics. The solution to this problem is a VPN. Here are some VPN services that you can use to watch the 2022 Commonwealth Games from anywhere.

History of the Commonwealth Games

Beginning originally in 1930 as the British Empire Games, the event finally settled on it’s current name in 1974. This unique tournament is a multi-sport event is open to countries in the Commonwealth of Nations. The Commonwealth is an intergovernmental organization made up of 53 member states. Most of these nations were former British territories. The games are played at 4 year intervals, and 2014 marks the 20th time the games have been held. Of course, there was a gap of 12 years between 1938 and 1950, because of World War II.

Much like the Olympics, multiple teams from the 53 different countries are allowed to compete. Because of that, 71 teams representing almost 5000 athletes are set to participate in the current Commonwealth Games. Competitors come from England, Scotland, India, Australia, and Canada, just to name a few. 94 different flags have flown in the games since 1930. An interesting part of the Commonwealth Games is that the individual countries of the UK are allowed to fly their own flags and compete as separate nations. Though the United States was once a part of the British empire, they were never members of the Commonwealth of Nations.

While some of the sporting events in the Commonwealth Games are the same as in the Olympics, they also include games that are mostly played in the member countries. As an example, it is unlikely you will ever see some of the current events like Lawn bowls or Netball in the Olympic games. By the same token, you are unlikely to see BMX or indoor Volleyball being played at the Commonwealth Games.

Also like the Olympics, locations of the games change for every holding. Right now, Australia and Canada are tied for hosting the most games. They have each hosted the games 4 times. Next, New Zealand and Scotland have each hosted 3 times (including this one). England has hosted twice, and India, Malaysia, Jamaica, and Wales have all hosted once. The next set of games in 2022 will see another time added to England for hosting. In 2026, Australia will host the 23rd games for the fifth time.

The Commonwealth Games are overseen by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF). They also choose what sports will be played, and which city will host the games. Just like with the summer Olympics, host cities are chosen eight to twelve years in advance. The CGF is responsible for handing out medals, but they may also hand out an Order of Merit as well.

The Order of Merit award was established in 1902, and is given to an athlete that has rendered services to the Commonwealth Games movement. It is considered to be a personal gift from the sovereign. Athletes that recieve this medal are held in high regards, and contribute to the advancement of the games. Only one per Commonwealth Games may be given out, and the athletes get the right to put the letters OM after their name as part of their title. Let’s take a look at how to watch these wonderful games.

Catch all the action by watching the BBC coverage of the Commonwealth Games. They will have all the exciting moments from July 28th through August 8th.
