CNNgo is the online streaming version of the popular American news network, CNN. It is a pay TV network, so the CNN Domestic (US) version is available to those that have a cable or satellite subscription in the US. If you are going to be traveling abroad, you would typically have to miss out on the network’s coverage. However, there is a solution to that issue. By connecting to a VPN, you can unblock geo-restrictions.

While the streaming version of this channel was just released in 2014, the channel itself has been around for quite some time. Beginning in 1980, Ted Turner had the idea to change news to a 24-hour cycle. The Cable News Network (CNN) would broadcast news around the clock without worrying about interrupting other broadcasts.
As more and more families in the 80s started to get cable or satellite service, the channel grew in popularity. CNN2 and HLN were both launched as companions to the network, and they featured 30-minute broadcasts 24 hours a day. Currently, the network and others created by Turner are owned by the Time Warner Company. While the network did well, it would take a big event to get the big 3 US networks to take it more seriously.
That event was the Gulf War of 1991. CNN was the only network that was able to broadcast from inside of Iraq during the beginning hours of the campaign. That coverage saw the network overtake the big three for the first time in history. Also, live images were not able to be broadcast, so the dramatic recounting of the events felt like the World War 2 bombings of London. This coverage was picked up by other international networks, so more than 1 billion viewers watched intently.
Because it is a cable and satellite channel, you must be a US resident and have one of those types of services to watch the US version. Again, if you are traveling overseas, you would normally not be able to watch the coverage. That is where the VPN comes in. Once you sign up for the VPN service, you would need to connect to a server located in the US to gain access. Then, you can watch the domestic version of the news as you would normally.
Which VPN service you choose depends on your goals. There are some good suggestions we have that will make things simple. If your goal is security and unblocking channels, be sure to take a look at ExpressVPN. They have a kill switch feature, and they do not keep any activity logs. If you only want to unblock CNNgo, you’ll want to take a look at NordVPN. They offer a Smart DNS service that will help you get around any geo-restrictions that would prevent you from seeing the channel without the overhead of encryption.
Both of these options will unblock content. The ones we just mentioned are what we feel are the best choices. They were chosen based on speed, functionality, server locations, reliability, and price. Be sure you can easily connect and stream to the US server before you travel. Feel free to check out our top 10 VPN services list for other choices if you would like other options.
