Formula 1 racing is popular in China. It has been even more so since the Shanghai International Circuit opened in 2004. At a cost of approximately $450 million USD, the Chinese government entered a joint venture with a private company group. While tracks can take a while to build, the Shanghai International racetrack was completed in just 18 months. That is due, in part, to a team of 3000 engineers working around the clock. However, the track also has some issues.

Despite the greatness of the track, the former circuit manager was convicted of embezzlement as part of a corruption scandal in Shanghai. In the wake of the scandal, several high-level members of the Chinese Communist Party were fired. Another issue that causes problems partially has to do with location. Since the track was built on swampland, turns 1, 8, and 14 have been sinking into the swamp. It caused so much concern that the course had to be inspected in 2011

This course has a length of 3.388 miles and that includes 16 turns. It also can seat over 250,000 spectators. Of course, the track is not just used for Formula 1 races. Other events include a round of the MotoGP world championship, a round of the Australian-based V8 Supercar championship, and the final round of the A1 Grand Prix.

Here is the racing schedule for the rest of the year.
