Best VPNs for Windows 10

Windows 10Windows 10 is officially released in August. The new operating system is said to be un-intrusive, and a free upgrade for users running Windows 7 or higher.  We highly recommend using a VPN with the new OS as we would with any operating system. There are some good reasons for that, and one of them is security. It is no secret when new software comes out, especially operating systems, there are bound to be glitches.  A good VPN will protect your data and help unblock sites in other countries.

Looking for VPN suggestions for earlier versions of Windows?  Check out our Windows 7 or Windows 8 posts.

Windows 10 is considered a make or break operating system for Microsoft. The New OS is robust, pleasant to use, and free for many. It also promises to support a universal app that will run on any platform that Microsoft has, whether it is a phone, tablet, console, desktop, laptop, or other devices. The new OS looks like a hybrid of Windows 8 and Windows 7. It does still have the panels, but like in 8.1, they brought back the start button and files seem to be easily searchable and logically arranged this time. So far, the reviews of Windows 10 have been pretty good, but lets look at some potential problems.

As with any new version of an operating system, there are challenges that software developers face. With millions upgrading, there is sure to be some time before everyone is compliant with the new OS. For the larger developers, adaptation should not be a problem. However, some of the small developers may lack the resources to be able to be compliant immediately.

The VPNs we have chosen for this post are all large, well known companies in the online privacy space.  They were ready for Windows 8 faster than other services so we expect the same responsiveness for Windows 10. We have some good ideas regarding which options to choose. Though all of our options use secure encryption, using the OpenVPN protocol would always be the best option to go with. If speed is of the essence, you would use OpenVPN (UDP). That is the best option for Skype, VoIP, online gaming, or even using streaming services like Netflix. Since new OSes may sometimes be unstable, if you have connection issues and problems with the connection dropping, your best option should be OpenVPN (TCP). The latter may slow the connection somewhat, but the data goes through an error checking procedure. To stream or connect to a VPN by using a mobile device like a Windows phone, you can also look into other protocols including L2TP and IKEv2 for good privacy.

If you want to secure your data, we recommend ExpressVPN. They don’t keep logs and have a kill switch feature, so it ensures your web browsing is safe. Again, since new operating systems may have connection issues, that may prove to be an invaluable tool. If you want to try your hand at streaming HD content on Netflix within Windows 10, ExpressVPN again is the best choice. Since Windows 10 supports 4k (UHD-1) and soon 8k (UHD-2), you will want a fast VPN network. ExpressVPN offers a mobile client as well, so you would only need to connect, and you would be able to stream from the countries with the largest content libraries. The US has the biggest market and the number of HD choices for now.

If you just want to have access to geo-restricted content, you would want to use the ExpressVPN MediaStreamer (Smart DNS) feature. This will aid in unblocking channels without the slight speed loss. It may be tempting to go without protection in the interest of speed, but we would never advise sacrificing security for a speed increase. Any loss you would encounter is more than made up for in safety.  Whereas speed is a problem if you are trying to stream in some cases, since you only need a speed of 800 kbps for regular content, there should be no quality loss. The extra layer of encryption is worth any speed loss. Wither way, ExpressVPN members have full access to both services.

There are other choices you could consider by checking out our top 10 VPN services. The options we mention in this post are the best overall for Windows 10, so there should be no need. We used security, speed, and price as criteria in our choices. In addition, we also picked the ones with large numbers of network servers you may wish to connect to. The most dependable VPN providers will secure your privacy and have fast networks for streaming HD programming from other countries. Our choices do both.
