Best VPNs for Germany

GermanyGermany is a country located in western Europe, and is the most populated country in the EU. It is also ranked third in the world for importing and exporting, giving them a very high standard of living and a robust economy. The German data retention policy seems to be slanted more towards the citizens’ privacy than pervasive surveillance. Still, keeping your sensitive data safe is one of the most important things you can do. Be sure to keep your info secure with a VPN.

Let’s talk a bit about another good reason to use a VPN, Germany’s anti-piracy laws. Like others in Europe, Germany does have laws that are targeted to reduce piracy. If you are found to have pirated copies of material, it could cost you substantially per occasion.

Under German law, a rights holder may inquire from the government the names and addresses of the internet connection holders, and hold them liable for damages. So, if a McDonald’s had free WIFI, that McDonald’s would be held liable for any illegal downloads done by customers on its connection. Once the addresses are obtained, law firms send out cease and desist letters informing infringers that they need to pay damages, and sign a contract stating they will no longer illegally share files.

In the past, over half of a million of these letters were sent out, providing a windfall for firms that would allow violators to “take care of” these cases by paying legal fees. Recently though, the German government has capped the fees these law firms could be paid for individual claims to around 1000 euros. That said, the courts are trying to make the laws more fair. It almost seems the courts felt the law firms were being greedy and decided to do something about it.

All of this could be avoided by using a VPN. A virtual private network service will help you in several ways in Germany. As we mentioned earlier, the government does not seem to monitor it’s citizens very closely. They may not, but there are bound to be others that would love to get their hands on your data. VPNs encrypt your connection, thus securing your private data.

The second ability of a VPN will allow you to unblock restricted content. With the number of streaming services available in Germany, it is clear that streaming is done quite a bit of the time. Let’s say you had a paid subscription to Netflix, one of the biggest video streaming companies around the world. The German library for Netflix only houses about 1650 titles. Compare that to the 7500+ titles in the biggest Netflix market, the US, and it is pretty clear to see why it would be good to get access to blocked content. Of course, you could gain access to other streaming services as well from anywhere you happen to be.

VPNs can be tricky at times to set up, but if you select the ones with custom clients, the setup is easy. You would begin this process by downloading a client first, selecting a country, and pushing a connect button. Because your connection is encrypted, ISPs only see traffic as opposed to specifics. We have some great recommendations for VPNs to ensure your goals are met, no matter what they are. Of the ones we will suggest, they all have custom clients so any of them will do the job you need them to do. They all use secure encryption levels, however, using the OpenVPN protocol will always be your best decision. OpenVPN (UDP) is best for streaming.

Your first step is to take a look at your reason for using a VPN. If you want to secure your data or unblock content, we would suggest ExpressVPN. They do not keep traffic logs and have a kill switch feature, therefore adding an extra layer of protection to your browsing. For streaming things online, say from a premium service like Netflix or any of the other streaming services, ExpressVPN is still the way to go. They have a very large, fast network so you would be able to easily connect to those libraries of content and stream them.

If you are traveling outside of Germany and you wish to stay current on favorite shows, we recommend ExpressVPN or PIA. Both encrypt traffic, but ExpressVPN includes MediaStreamer SmartDNS with their VPN that helps you unblock channels without the overhead of encryption. Why would you want to miss out on any of the 51+ channels you normally watch?  You won’t have to with a VPN.

Please check out our list of the top 10 VPN services if you’d like other suggestions, but we have a good group of VPNs in this post. We have chosen these selections over other leading VPN services based on privacy, server locations, speed, and price. We also looked for services with a good network of VPN servers in the regions for you.

Reliable VPN providers help secure your online privacy, and have fast networks to stream HD content from other countries. The ones we have mentioned in this post are the best VPNs overall for your specific goals. Geo-blocked streaming services and many other popular channels would all be accessible from Germany with a VPN.
