Whoer VPN main image

Whoer VPN is a small VPN service that the parent company, Whoix Ltd, created. They offer a free version and a premium one. They also offer a free trial and have apps for Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, and iOS, as well as Chrome, Firefox, Opera, and Yandex. It supports an 18 country network, however, the trial version only gives you access to the Netherlands. There are a few questions we have about this service, and we will address them in review of Whoer VPN. We’ll also test the service to see how it performs and what it has to offer.

How Much Does Whoer VPN Cost?

Interestingly, even to use it for free, it still asks you to sign up. While that is not preferable, the “free trial” period is 1471 days. If you get the paid version, the one month plan is $9.90 a month. If you get the 6-month plan, the price drops to $6.50 a month. Finally, the 1-year plan is $3.90 a month. The website says they support Visa, Mastercard, PayPal, GPay, Qiwi, Yandex, Perfect Money, WebMoney, Bitcoin, Dash, Ethereum, and Payeer. While they do have a large number of payment options, we show that they do not actually support PayPal or Payeer. As you can see in the image below, they offer a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Ideally, we would like to see them support both payment types or remove them from the website.

Who is Whoix Ltd.?

Whoix Ltd. runs Whoer VPN and the Whoer.net website. Several experts use the site to test IP address exposure, along with a few other tools. When looking up the company, one location says they are based in Panama, while their website says they are based in Cyprus. That may be because the VPN could have a separate location from the website. Whichever of the two countries it is, we are glad to see that they are outside of the jurisdiction of the 14 Eyes countries. We also found it interesting that the website’s original language is Russian. There are a few companies that started in Russia and moved to other countries. We would prefer a bit more clarity, though.

Where are the Whoer VPN Servers?

Again, Whoer VPN has servers in 18 countries. Let’s take a look at where those are.

  • Singapore
  • Russia (Moscow)
  • Turkey (Istanbul)
  • Spain (Madrid)
  • Switzerland (Zurich)
  • UK (London)
  • Netherlands (Dronten)
  • Germany (Munich)
  • Netherlands (Naldwijk)
  • US (Los Angeles)
  • US (Hutchinson)
  • Canada (Montreal)
  • Ukraine (Kiev)
  • Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh)
  • Hong Kong
  • Sweden (Stockholm)
  • France (Paris)
  • Italy (Milan)
  • Germany (Frankfurt)
  • Netherlands (Amsterdam)
  • Germany (Dusseldorf)
  • Poland (Warsaw)
  • US (Ashburn)
  • US (Miami)
  • Canada (Toronto)
  • Ukraine (Kharkiv)

What Features does Whoer VPN Offer?

Whoer VPN console

As far as features go, Whoer VPN has a few options. Let’s take a look at what they are, now.

  • Start at system startup – This feature allows the VPN to connect as soon as you start your system. That is true whether you are using a desktop of mobile
  • Auto-connect – When you use this feature, it will connect to the VPN as soon as you open the client.
  • Kill Switch – This feature will automatically stop your internet traffic if your connection drops.
  • Hide VPN – When using this feature, it obfuscates your VPN. You can choose to have it mimic home or mimic mobile.
  • Use UDP – It is strange that this option is here. Of course, it is a reference to OpenVPN. Usually, that is the default protocol for VPN. That makes us wonder what the normal protocols they use are.

The Whoer app is missing a couple things we would like to see. That includes split tunneling and protocol transparency. Unfortunately, we can’t find anywhere that mentions the protocols they use.

DNS Leak Test

As we mentioned, we like to do some privacy testing for the VPNs we write about. In taking a look at things, you can see that Whoever VPN does pretty well. In this image, you do not see any evidence of our IP address. You can also see that all requests come from the same network. which is not common in free services. Whoer VPN does not leak, but we are supposed to be located in the Netherlands so the IP address is showing up in the wrong country.

Whoer VPN Leak Test

Speed Test

Since we tested the free version of the VPN, we expected a huge speed loss. The first image you see is our Internet speed to Boston before connecting to Whoer VPN. We got a download speed of 449.33 Mbps.

Baseline Speedtest

Unfortunately, you can see that there is a dramatic loss of speed when we connected to a VPN server. At only 0.95 Mbps, it is clear that there is nearly a 100% loss in speed. Again, we are using the free version. We expect the premium version speeds to be faster. The speed you see below is nearly usable for many things including streaming services.

Netflix Test

While we do not have many options available, we were able to test Netflix. We connected to the free server in the Netherlands. If you have ever tried to connect to Netflix with a VPN, you know that it usually detects them. In this picture, you can see that we succeeded in getting it to play. Although it is nearly unwatchable because of the speed, it does work.

Mobile Support

Despite the trend toward mobile computing, Whoer VPN’s mobile app, at least for Android, is lacking. We found that it did not have the same features as the desktop version. In these images, you see that we are connected to the only server they allow. By tapping the menu option, you get the option to run on startup and traffic compression. You also see that the speeds are as slow as our previous tests.

Customer Service

Unfortunately, the customer service for Whoer VPN only gives you the option of filling out an email form. They make everything easy, and they have setup guides on their site. That said, you can not count on much support from the Whoer VPN team. Ideally, we would like to see a chat feature, phone number, knowledge base, or even forums to provide the user with additional support.

Our Verdict on Whoer VPN

Despite the slowness of the free version, we found Whoer VPN to be decent. As with any service, there are good points and areas of weakness. The popularity of the website and the tools they offer are one thing they have going for them. Let’s take a look at some of the others.

Good Points

  • Easy to use
  • 30-day money-back guarantee
  • DNS does not leak
  • Ability to access Netflix
  • No logs policy
  • Based outside of 14 Eyes countries

Improvement Points

  • Increase number of free servers
  • Add more countries to the network
  • Add more features to desktop and mobile apps
  • Provide customer support via live chat
  • Correct or remove invalid payment options on the website
  • Increase the transparency of which protocols are used

While there are definitely things the company can improve, Whoer VPN does fairly well with what it offers. We would love to see them tell you what VPN protocols they are using, though. If you get the premium version, you should be able to safely use the VPN for most things.
