Volleyball organizers founded the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) in 1947. Two years later, the FIVB created the FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship. It was not for another 3 years that they would establish the FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship counterpart. The FIVB restricted both versions to Europe at that time. Since the Olympic committee added volleyball to the Olympics in 1960, both championships advanced 2 years. From that point, they were both on alternate time frames than the Summer Olympic Games.
As we mentioned, Italy will host the Men’s championships. At 3 times, the country has hosted the men’s championships the most. The women’s team will play their championship in a familiar location hosted by Japan. The country will host it for 5th time.
We’ll now take a look at the qualifications for this tournament.
- Twenty-four teams will participate in each event.
- Qualification procedures for the World Championship last more than two years.
- Host nations are always pre-qualified.
- The number of spots available per confederation is determined by the FIVB: Europe has usually the highest, and Africa or South America the lowest.
- To participate in the event, teams must survive a number of qualification tournaments based on their position in the FIVB World Rankings. Low ranking teams may have to engage in up to three tournaments to be offered a spot. High ranking teams typically play only one.
- The competition is divided into two phases. Those are preliminary round and a final round. Depending on the number of participating teams, one or more intermediary rounds may also be required.
- In the preliminary round, teams are organized in pools. Each team plays one match against all other teams in its pool.
- When all the matches of the preliminary round have been played, the top teams in each pool qualify for the following round(s), and the remaining ones leave the competition. The number of participating teams and the format that will be employed in the finals.
- The FIVB has tried various different formats for the final round(s). For some years now, (since 2004), there seems to be a consensus that at least semifinals and finals must be played according to the Olympic format.
- Quarterfinals may consist of groups of teams playing against each other, or of direct confrontation. In the latter case, additional intermediary rounds might be required to reduce the number of surviving teams to eight.
- The tournament implements very tight line-up restrictions. Only twelve players are allowed, and no replacement is permitted, even in case of injuries.
Now to the important part. Not many providers will show these championships. For those that have access to the Universal sports network, they will have some of the matches available. If not, there are streaming services that may help you out. If you are located outside of the US, you would need a VPN. The FIVB website recommends using www.Laola1.tv. However, you will want to first connect to a VPN server in Austria or the region since the site is located in Austria.
