The Tokyo Marathon is a relatively new tradition, but it has become one of the 6 major marathons of the IAAF. Beginning in its current form in 2007, the Tokyo Marathon is one of the world’s leading races, with 25,000 participants in the first year. In 2023, this marathon will be run on Sunday, March 5th at 9:10 am, local time. This is Saturday, March 4th at 7:10 pm EST. Broadcasters for this race include the Nippon Television Network in Japan and Flotrack in the US. There may be others, but if you are planning to watch live online, you should use a VPN.

How to Watch the Tokyo Marathon from Anywhere

This year will see 36,000 people get selected to run in this race. Based on last year’s numbers, that is roughly only 10% of the applicants. That means that nearly 400,000 people applied to compete in the race.  That’s an impressive number that is likely to continue growing. The entrance fee for this race is 10,800 Yen domestically, and 12,800 Yen for overseas entries. That works out to about $100 USD, but the prize money may vary.

This race is the youngest of the major marathons, and very quickly gained recognition as an extremely popular race to run in. Course wise, it begins at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building and ends at Tokyo Big Sight. To qualify as an elite runner in the Tokyo Marathon, males and females have different goals. Males need to complete a full marathon in 2 hours and 23 minutes. Females need to complete a full marathon in 2 hours and 54 minutes.  In 2014, the course record was set by Kenyan runner, Dickson Chumba. He was able to complete the 26.2-mile race in a time of 2 hours, 5 minutes, and 42 seconds. Will this be the year that someone challenges that record?  If history is any indicator we could see the record broken in Tokyo this year.

Currently, watching the Tokyo Marathon will provide you with several options. If you are from the US or Canada you can watch the race on Flotrack. The catch is, you sign up for an account to stream. If you are in Japan, as we mentioned earlier, it will be available on the Nippon Television Network. Though other options may be available, that information is difficult to find. By using a VPN, you could watch the race from anywhere in the world. All you would need to do is connect to a server in Japan and enjoy local coverage or to a server in the US to stream it from Flotrack.
