Where to Watch the Paralympics
As we mentioned, there will be quite a bit of coverage for the Paralympics, depending on where you live. The UK is broadcasting their coverage on the Channel 4 networks. They will be showing coverage the events along with Sky Italia. The US coverage will be on NBC, NBCSN, and Olympic Channel. You can watch live on NBCSports.com and via the NBC Sports app. They have agreed to broadcast at least 250 hours of the games. If you are in the US, you would need a satellite or cable subscription to be able to watch the broadcasts online. If you are not there and wanted to watch US coverage, you would need a VPN. Those interested in seeing more coverage than is being offered in your country will need a VPN in that case too.
Paralympics History
The forerunner of the Paralympics has a noble past. The first organized game started in 1948 as a way to allow injured World War II vets compete in their own games. The first Paralympics were called the 1948 International Wheelchair Games. Since then, many milestones have been reached. The first official Paralympics were held in 1960. By that time, the games were opened to more than just veterans. Initially, the games were only open to wheelchair athletes. In 1976, the rules were expanded to include athletes with artificial limbs.
The first Paralympics started with 16 events and featured 400 athletes from 23 countries. This year, the Paralympics will have 22 different sports, including canoeing and paratriathlon. Some of the events are well known like archery, road cycling, and equestrian events. Other events like Boccia and Goalball are less well known. Of course, many of them have been adapted for wheelchairs.
As you could imagine, the Paralympics are not as popular as the regular Olympics. Part of the financial woes of the Paralympics are blamed on slow ticket sales. By mid August, only 12% of the 3.3 million tickets had been sold. Since the ticket prices are only 1/4th of the cost of the regular Olympic tickets, Paralympic tickets are very reasonable and easy to obtain.
