How to Use a VPN to Watch the NHL Playoffs

We will use ExpressVPN for the example of how to use a VPN service to watch your favorite NHL teams compete for the Stanley Cup.  First, you’ll want to download the VPN client. ExpressVPN offers client software for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Mobile users can download apps for iOS and Android. You can even connect your router to secure every device on your network. It will send all your communications through the VPN which extends support to devices like game consoles and streaming boxes. They even have an app for Amazon Fire TV devices.

Now that you’ve had a chance to download and install the software it’s time to connect. Launch the ExpressVPN client and select a server location. We’ll walk you through step by step using their Windows client. Keep in mind we are using images from US servers since NHL.tv is geo-restricted. You can avoid blackout restrictions by connecting to a server in another region of the US or Canada.

ExpressVPN server locations

  • Since NHL.tv is available in the US, you will want to pick a server in the United States. ExpressVPN has a large network of servers located all over the US.
  • We recommend you select OpenVPN (TCP) or (UDP). For streaming videos from sites like YouTube, we use OpenVPN (UDP) because its faster than TCP. They also support PPTP, L2TP, and SSTP. We still recommend OpenVPN UDP for the best mix of speed and privacy protection.
  • Click the big round connect button. After a few seconds, you’ll see the shield around the button turn green. There will also be a message letting you know the “VPN is ON”
  • You now have an IP address in the USA, as far as anyone can tell online. As such, you can reach any site as if you were sitting there. The same would be true if you connected to a server in the Canada or anywhere else in the world.

It is just that easy to do. Now that you have an IP address from an ExpressVPN server in the US, you can browse the Internet or watch the Stanley Cup playoffs as if you were actually there. The same is true from any country, but you will want to connect to a server in the US or Canada to watch the games.

As you can probably tell by now, a good VPN opens access to content around the world. For use outside of the US, the service can help you unblock popular services like Netflix, Hulu, and Pandora. You still need an account for services like Netflix but the VPN will help you watch American shows and movies on Netflix as if you were physically there or in any other region you would like to access.

2019 NHL Stanley Cup Highlights

The Nashville Predators, Calgary Flames, Tampa Bay Lightning, and Washington Capitals are the top seated teams in the playoffs this year. They will need to win all four rounds to take home the Stanley Cup. Can the Las Vegas Golden Knights surprise the competition and march into history? That’s what the playoffs are all about. Watch and enjoy all the action.

All eyes will be on the Las Vegas Golden Knights again this year for the championship. Can the Golden Knights skate into history as the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup in their 2nd season? This is truly an epic team to watch. You may not see these circumstances happen again, at least for some time.

The Stanley Cup Playoffs is one of the oldest professional sports championships in North America. Originally commissioned in 1892, mergers and folds have seen the cup come to represent the best the league has to offer. For the playoffs and the championship, the teams competing play 7 games per series. The two teams play three 20 minute periods. The teams alternate locations, and the first team to win 4 games is considered the winner.

Unlike other professional sports, there is not a new cup created every year. When the bottom band is full from engraved names, the oldest band is removed and preserved in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Also not all names from the winning team are included on the trophy. Of course, the cities that represent the teams in the Stanley Cup Playoffs will get a nice boost to their economy. Instead of a neutral location, many like the style of playing in the teams home arenas.

Let’s take a look at the round 1 match ups for the 2019 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs:

Western Conference:

  • Nashville Predators vs. Dallas Stars
  • Winnipeg Jets vs. St. Louis Blues
  • Calgary Flames vs. Colorado Avalanche
  • San Jose Sharks vs. Las Vegas Golden Knights

Eastern Conference:

  • Tampa Bay Lightning vs. Columbus Blue Jackets
  • Boston Bruins vs. Toronto Maple Leafs
  • Washington Capitals vs. Carolina Hurricanes
  • New York Islanders vs. Pittsburgh Penguins

The NHL Playoffs will be broadcast on the NBC Sports Network, NBC, CNBC, or USA channel in the United States. You will need a cable or satellite login to view the live streams on either of those channels. There is another alternative this year. You can sign up for NHL.TV to watch all the excitement. The drawback to the NHL.TV streaming service is the blackout restrictions. Fortunately, you can avoid the blackouts by using a VPN. This will allow you to enjoy every Stanley Cup game from anywhere in the world. Connect to a VPN server in the US or Canada and enjoy the NHL Playoffs without the annoying geo blocks. You will still need access to a cable / satellite login or a subscription to NHL.TV to watch the games. Cheer your team on to victory this year and watch them lift the cup.

Enjoy all the excitement during the 2018 NHL Playoffs.  Please share this post with your friends so they can enjoy all the action from anywhere in the world with a VPN.  Follow us @VPNFan for the latest deals and guides.
