Yesterday we wrote a guide to help users unblock sites in India like Vimeo and GitHub after the government decided to block a number of websites. Netflix is different. The site isn’t blocked based on a government decision. Instead Netflix restricts their popular online streaming service to users in specific countries like the United States. Blocking access to users in other countries including India.
When you try to connect to Netflix from India it displays a message stating that Netflix hasn’t come to this part of the world yet. Luckily you don’t need to wait any longer. Using a VPN will help you gain immediate access to Netflix and other geographically restricted sites.
I’m happy to share that you can enjoy Netflix shows and movies from India with a VPN service. In a moment I’ll show you how to set up a VPN to watch Netflix from India. The key is to get an IP address in a country which supports Netflix. The United States is a popular choice so we’ll use it in our guide. You could also connect to a VPN server in the UK or elsewhere to watch Netflix content from that region.

How to Watch American Netflix in India with a VPN
We’ll use ExpressVPN for the example of how to use a VPN service to stream American Netflix in India. First, you’ll want to download the VPN client. ExpressVPN offers free client software for Windows, Mac and Linux. In addition to free apps for iOS and Android.
Now that you’ve had a chance to download and install the software, it’s time to connect. Launch the ExpressVPN client and select a server location. In this case you will want to connect to a VPN server in the United States. We’ll walk you through step by step using their Windows client.
- Select a server location. Some recommendations for US Netflix include New York City and Los Angeles. As we mentioned, that is because you would be geo-blocked if you are not in the correct area.
- We recommend you select OpenVPN (TCP) or (UDP). For streaming videos from sites like YouTube, we use OpenVPN (UDP) because it’s faster than TCP. They also support PPTP, L2TP, and IKEv2. We still recommend OpenVPN UDP for the best mix of speed and privacy protection.
- Click the big round connect button. After a few seconds, you’ll see the shield around the button turn green. There will also be a message letting you know the “VPN is ON”
- You now have an IP address in the United States, you are located in the U.S. as far as anyone can tell online. Now, you can reach any site as if you were sitting there. The same would be true if you connected to a server in a different region.
That’s all there is to it. Now that you have an IP address from the ExpressVPN server in the US you can browse the Internet as if you were actually there. Connecting to a server in the United Kingdom would let you watch BBC programming with iPlayer. The same is true for other countries.
As you may have guessed by now a good VPN opens access to content around the world. Whether you’re in India or elsewhere a VPN can help you access popular services like Netflix, Hulu and Pandora. You still need an account for services like Netflix but the VPN will help you watch US television shows and movies as if you were sitting in the United States.
Netflix is available in the following regions:
- United Kingdom
- United States
You can connect to a VPN server in any of the countries listed above to watch Netflix content that’s local to the region. For example Netflix UK includes content from Channel 4, ITV and the BBC.
