Pakistan’s Air Marshal, Nur Khan, first conceived the idea of the Men’s World Cup in 1969. World Cup participants played the first one in Barcelona, Spain instead of Pakistan. That is because of political turmoil. It was then that the FIH decided to move the tournament to neutral grounds. At that time, 12 teams competed in the cup. Ironically, Pakistan won the first World Cup. The largest World Cup to date took place in 2002. That year, 16 teams competed in the tournament.
