The French Open has a long and rich history. The first venue, the Racing Club de France held the first male tournament in 1891. Île de Puteaux held the first women’s singles tournament in 1897. Until Roland Garros was built in 1928, four different venues were used. The French Open is the only tennis major tournament that is played on clay. Because clay makes the gameplay slower, the French Open is largely considered to be the most physically demanding tennis tournament on earth.
Rafael Nadal is the returning champion this year. Last year, he beat Dominic Thiem to score his 12th championship win at Roland Garros. This year, Nadal will try to hold on to his Championship title. Dominic Thiem will be anxious to try to take the title away from him. Of course, you can’t count out Roger Federer or Novak Djokovic. There is no doubt that there is heavy competition in men’s tennis, and that makes for an exciting French Open.
On the Women’s side, competitors will have to take a crack at the returning champion, Ashleigh Barty. There is no doubt that others will be looking to take her out. Only time will tell how this tournament will turn out. You can bet the world will be watching.
Broadcasters will show coverage all over the world, but here are a few channels showing the tournament specifically.
- United States – NBC, Tennis Channel
- United Kingdom – ITV
- France – FranceTV, EuroSport
