While Chess has been around for eons, the first official “World Cup” event took place in 1988-1989 and it was organized by the Grandmasters Association. However, the longest running version started in 2005 and is hosted by FIDE (Fédération Internationale des Échecs) which translates into the World Chess Federation. Since then, this Bi-annual event is most often held in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia. Watch as your favorite players compete for a purse of 1.6 million USD for winning the tournament.
Of previous 7 holdings of the tournament, Russia has the most champions with 3. Armenia has the second most with 2 champions. Other champions are from the US and Israel. If you want to find who will qualify for the Candidate’s Tournament, you will have to tune in and watch.
