Bahrain Grand Prix Circuit and Race Details

As we mentioned earlier, the Bahrain Grand Prix is held on the Bahrain International Circuit. Because construction started in 2002, this course is newer than some of the more well-known hosts. That means it has many of the modern conveniences that race fans now expect. Crown Prince, Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa initiated the building of the track. Since it opened in 2004, the track has hosted drag racing, Formula 1, GP2, V8 Supercars, 24-hour endurance races and more. Just 3 years after it was opened, it became the first Grand Prix circuit to be awarded the distinguished FIA Institute Centre of Excellence award. That award is given for excellent safety, race marshal, and medical facilities, and for the high standards of technology required to maintain them.

Hermann Tilke, the German architect, designed the circuit at a cost of $150 million dollars USD.  As you might expect, sandstorms would usually cause a problem during races since the track is in the middle of the desert. However, race organizers largely solved that issue by spraying glue on the sand around the track. There are 6 different layouts for the circuit, depending on the type of race.

This years race should be interesting, based on the field of competitors. The first and second place winners last year were Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen. Both competitors are fierce and will likely push each other all season long. However, Formula 1 fans may want to keep a close eye on Max Verstappen this year. At the age of 17, he entered his first Formula 1 race in 2015, making him the youngest full-time driver in history. The FIA raised the minimum age to 18 the year after he started. As he gains more experience, expect to see him win more championships. Especially now that he has a car that will fully compete with Mercedes. With that said, he won it all last season so that should give the Red Bull team confidence coming into Bahrain.

As with all Formula 1 races, there will be a lot of media attention from channels around the world. ESPN2 will stream the race live in the US. Channel 4 will be covering it in the UK. You can access Channel 4 and watch the race by connecting to a VPN server in the United Kingdom.
